The start of this trail begins around mile marker 83.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, north of the Peaks of Otter Lodge. There is a parking lot on the eastern side and you will see a brown sign denoting the beginning of the Flat Top trail.
Mile 0.0 The trail starts off by slowly elevating through the forest in more of a gradual ascent.
Mile 0.6 the trail turns sharply to the left and you begin a series of switchbacks
Mile 2.1 Reach the junction of Cross Rock Trail. At this junction you reach what is termed the pinnacle. If you crawl out on the outcropping of rocks near you, you are at the Pinnacle, which provides the best views on this hike.
2.6 Reach the summit, continue past the summit for a path that leads to the summit overlook
Retrace your steps for the return trip
There's no such thing as a bad hike, but this one is pretty lame. What more can we expect from a mountain that's right next to Sharp Top? The hike is mainly switchbacks and the summit is somewhat disappointing. The view is pretty obstructed compared to most wide angled views on this site. Literally just do this hike if you're really into hiking and want to brag to people that just hiked Sharp Top. Look them in the eyes and ask them if they have ever conquered its even taller sister summit, Flat Top, because you have.
